Summer to Autumn Skincare; The Transition

We’ve been lucky to have had some beautiful weather when Lockdown was in full force - and a lot of us had nothing else to do but sit in our gardens soaking up the sun. But I think summer might be officially over (if the rain last week was anything to go by) and we can’t help but be slightly looking forward to some colder mornings. It means hot chocolates and movie nights, warm knitwear, fluffy socks, sticking the fire on and yes, I’m going to say it – the countdown till Christmas. It’s only 102 days, FYI…

Now some of you may find that fact absolutely outrageous and you don’t want to know – but, Jingle Bells aside, we can’t turn our backs on the fact that the weather and season is changing, colder climates are coming and this will have an effect on our skin whether we like it or not. As the weather makes a change, we start to put our heating on more and more and although we don’t always feel it straight away, our skin can start to become dehydrated, leading to all sorts of not-so-fun issues. Let’s have a quick run through some of the ways the summer to autumn season transition can affect our skin and how we need to update our routines to suit the season change.

Our Skins’ Shed & Repair Process Slows

What happens?
During the cooler months, our skins’ shed and repair process begins to slow down, which means we don’t shed our old, dead skin as often as during the summer. This means that without regular exfoliation, our skin can become dry, rough and flaky in texture whilst looking dull in appearance.

What do we need to do?
To make sure your skin says refreshed with new skin cells coming through to give your skin a glow rather than a dull, tired appearance, make sure you exfoliate regularly. We also recommend having a deeper exfoliation treatment to target the deeper layers of your skin, such as Microdermabrasion. Treatments like this will help to speed up the renewal process.
You can also try our Microneedling or Chemical Peel treatments, which remove the deeper layers of dead skin, encouraging skin cell turnover, revealing fresh new layers of glowing skin and dramatic transformation.

Our Skin Becomes Dehydrated

What happens?
As the weather changes, we crank our central heating up and if you’re anything like me (you’re probably not), it has to be at least 23 degrees inside. Yes, my mum used to always tell me to just put another jumper on, but I don’t want to wear outside clothes inside, okay?
Anyway, we digress. Our skin becomes dehydrated, which is shown physically on the outside as dry or flaky and it can also feel tight. The texture becomes rough and it’s harder to make your makeup sit nicely, let alone look refreshed or rejuvenated.

What do we need to do?

Again, regularly exfoliate as this helps to replenish the skin cells, but hydrated skin can be targeted from multiple directions. Yes, we can hydrate from the inside out by making sure we’re drinking enough water, however the water from drinking actually reaches your skin cells nearly last, as it needs to pass through other organs first. So, there are other ways we can hydrate our skin. Use a nourishing moisturiser to combat dehydrated skin like our Environ Super Moisturiser. Also try adding a serum into your skincare routine, morning and night, like our extra hydrating Environ Intensive Hydrating Serum. Hyaluronic acid (prominent within this product) is a humectant, which means it can attract and retain more than 1000 x its weight in water, making it an essential ingredient for your skin when it comes to hydration.

Your Skincare Isn’t Suitable for the Season

What happens?
As the seasons change, our skincare needs to too. During the summer months, our skin gets oilier quicker and therefore needs less focus on deeply hydrating products. We slather on the SPF (which we do all year round, FYI) and mattifying moisturisers to keep the sweatiness at bay and use products that are light and airy, giving our skin room to breathe. Then, when we transition to autumn, our skin becomes less oily and instead, it can become dry and lacking in moisture. However, if we use the exact same routine and products as we did in summer, we might not be doing our skin any favours.

What do we need to do?
Adapt your skincare to suit the season. During autumn, focus more on trying to retain the summer glow through a cold, bitter winter by investing in deeply hydrating products such as our Image Transformation Mask, that focuses on intensive nourishment, whilst purifying the skin with its charcoal properties at the same time. Switch your skincare up to ensure hyaluronic acid is included morning and night. Protect your skin in the morning with a good moisturiser that can combat external elements such as the weather and try using a weekly
face mask such as our Environ Intensive Revival Masque that not only focuses on hydration, but does a lot to combat the signs of ageing too.

So, after running through a few things we need to consider when the seasons change and discussing some products that can help us, let's also take a little look into the facial treatments that will really benefit our skin during this transition.

LED Light Therapy
Whether it’s for skin strengthening, anti-inflammation or hydration, LED Light Therapy is a multifaceted treatment that has an array of benefits. Build on your skins’ health and strength by using our LED Light Therapy treatment to help stimulate the collagen within the skin. LED Light Therapy helps to increase this protein, which in turn encourages the skin to become more resistant to infections and other conditions such as skin redness, weak capillaries and wrinkles – all concerns that are more prevalent during the autumn/winter
seasons!

Have free LED Light Therapy worth £250 when you purchase a course of Image Skin Peels or Microneedling.

Image Chemical Peels
Reveal completely new skin with our amazing Image skincare chemical peels. Don’t be put off by the name – the strength of your peel is determined by your therapist after assessing your skins’ type and concerns. You can reverse the signs of skin damage (perhaps caused by all that back-garden sunbathing…) and ageing through peels, as they work to remove dead skin cells, impurities and clogged pores. Chemical Peels then illuminate the skin and reduce the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles, age spots and blemishes. The skin is stronger, with a better barrier against external elements as collagen is supported to provide firmer, plumper
looking skin.
